Mary J. Henley, Director of Gear Up and Pathways, Institutional Diversity
Those who nominated Mary describe her as being the type of person who is incredibly helpful in achieving goals. She serves as a mentor to students and staff, helping them grow academically and professionally. Although she juggles many priorities, she is always accessible and works to support students both professionally and personally. She demonstrates unquestionable accountability and responsiveness, as well as ownership of her projects.
Mary works to challenge her staff and the students she is helping by demanding quality, efficiency and professionalism. She represents CMU proudly within the Flint and Mount Pleasant communities, while serving as the director of Gear Up and Pathways.
Mary is motivated by her experience as a first generation college student. She has impacted thousands of students by increasing the number of first generation students who graduate and move on to graduate level programs or into professional careers. Additionally, she is recognized across the state of Michigan for serving first generation, “at risk” youth, as they prepare to succeed in college.
I know Mary is humbled by this award and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate 30 years of student success at CMU.
